What Type of Flooring is Suitable for Your Home?

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 10:05 PM

There will be a time when the existing flooring in your home becomes worn out and well past its best. When this happens you know it is time to choose something new to replace it with.

But while this can be an exciting time, wondering what your newly decorated room or rooms will look like, it is also a tough time. You’ve got to decide which type of flooring you’re going to install, and with so many options at your disposal it can take some time to consider them all.

So if you’re in this situation now, here are some considerations you may want to bear in mind.

Do you want to replace like for like?

If you were completely happy with the outgoing flooring, you may simply want to replace it with the same type. For instance you might have had a good quality carpet in place for many years, and you simply want to replace it to get the same benefits the old one offered. This will make your decision much easier because you will only have to choose from the colors and styles that are available.

How much cash do you have for your purchase?

Your budget is important. It will tell you how much you can afford to spend on your new flooring, and as such it might rule out one or more different types. For instance smaller budgets might not stretch to real wood flooring, but they might be big enough to invest in a good quality laminate instead.

Will the area be subjected to a lot of foot traffic?

Foot traffic is the most important thing to consider in terms of how much a new floor has to cope with. Don’t just think of the humans in your household either – consider any pets you might have too. A cheap floor isn’t going to last as long under a constant barrage of activity every day. Similarly a hardwood floor is not going to be able to withstand scratches from your dog’s claws in the same way that a laminate floor would.

What kind of effect are you going for?

Effect is all important when you choose your new floor. For instance you might want the feel of soft luscious carpet under your feet in your bedroom. Alternatively you may want the warm look you get from real wood flooring in the dining room. Whatever you want you should be able to find a type of flooring that will give you the effect you desire.

It’s plain to see that you must always consider every angle when you are thinking of investing in new flooring. Think about the flooring you have and whether it served its purpose. Do you want something totally different? Make sure whatever you choose won’t go out of date anytime soon. Flooring should be an investment rather than an expense, so make sure you choose wisely. This way you will be delighted with your choice.
